How We Do: Diaper Pails and Diaper Washing

Diaper Pail
We simply use a medium sized trash can and a waterproof diaper pail liner similar to this. I can’t remember where we ordered it from, but we love them. We ordered two so that one would go into the wash with the diapers and the other could then be placed in the bucket for the next batch. It makes it so easy and so much cleaner.
Washing
During many research hours I read a lot about washing the diapers. There are literally dozens of different ways to do this. Everyone claimed theirs worked the best. The Mother-Ease website has some information on this as well, specifically for their diapers. So I figured we’d try one way out and if it didn’t work for us we’d move onto something else. We have used this method from the start and it seems to work for us and our diapers.
- Dump diapers into washing machine and turn diaper liner inside out. Pour in ~ 1/3 c. baking soda. Wash in cold water on the large setting.
- Turn water setting to hot. Pour in ~ 1/3 c. baking soda, about 1/4 of the amount of detergent used for normal laundry loads and a downy ball filled with vinegar. Wash in hot water on the large setting.
- Turn the cold rinse cycle on. Dump in ~ 1/2 c. vinegar. Let rinse cycle run through.
- Remove diapers and line dry or throw in dryer. Line dry covers and pail liner.
Closing Note: I highly recommend trying cloth diapers. Whichever kind you use, you will find that it really isn’t as much of a hassle as some will tell you. Before choosing cloth diapers I was personally told by a close relative that they “weren’t worth the inconvenience.” I find this to be untrue and know that the benefits far out weigh the cons. I feel that they are the best option for our little ones’ bums.
