Kitchen Tip: Salt your sweets

This may sound odd, but adding salt to anything sweet makes that treat even more delicious. When you do this, however, make sure it is a good quality sea salt and not regular old table salt. The purity of the sea salt allows the other flavors to come through in whatever you are eating, while table salt can be harsh and taste of chemicals.

A few examples:

  • Add a pinch of salt to your morning porridge. It not only brings out the flavor of your sweetener, but also the grain and any other toppings you add.
  • Add a pinch of salt to your hot cocoa. If you are making it from scratch add a pinch of salt along with your cocoa powder and sweetener. It makes it extra yummy.
  • Finally, sprinkle fine grained sea salt over your ice cream. I know it sounds crazy, but it is delicious. Last week my husband surprised me by bringing home some coffee ice cream. I sprinkled some unrefined sea salt on top and it was so much better than plain.

And remember… just a pinch!

  1. Have you had the new Starbucks’ Hot Chocolate–Salted Caramel. It is SOOOOO good. And my favorite treat is french fries dipped in ice cream. And I love salt on my watermelon. It’s good to know that there’s someone else feeling the salt love!

  2. Ha, I can’t remember the last time I went to Starbucks. Not that I wouldn’t mind a frappuccino right about now. I agree on the french fries dipped in ice cream. I’ll have to try salt on my watermelon, interesting.

    Thanks for stopping by!
