Nourishing Grain-Free Breakfast Ideas

I have gotten myself into a breakfast rut.

At some point in the grain-free/low-carb process I started growing weary of eggs. In fact ever since my last pregnancy I haven’t enjoyed those deep orange yolks as I used to. I distinctly remember going to our bedroom – the room farthest from the kitchen – and sticking my head out the window as my husband cooked eggs for himself and my toddler. I couldn’t stand the smell of them, let alone the taste.

Eggs are arguably one of the most nutritious foods, however, so they are in heavy rotation around here for breakfast. But some days we just need something a bit different. I’d just as soon have a big piece of grass-fed meat and a cup of coffee for breakfast every morning, but that is not sustainable on a budget.

There are other ways to use eggs – in baked goods using coconut flour or almond flour, for instance. We can also branch out and eat more savory, dinner-type foods, which I prefer. Hopefully creating this list will inspire me to be a bit more creative when it comes to breakfast.

Grain-Free Breakfast Ideas

  • Homemade yogurt with berries and nuts.
  • Eggs or meat with greens.
  • Almond flour pancakes with fruit.
  • Coconut flour pancakes with nut butter and fruit.
  • Smoothies using either yogurt, kefir or coconut milk as a base.
  • Eggnog smoothie. This is great as a high-protein, high-fat breakfast. I need to tweak the recipe still but with pastured egg yolks, raw cream, stevia or raw honey and plenty of nutmeg and ice, it is quite the treat.
  • French toast made from coconut flour bread.
  • Eggs or meat alongside sweet potatoes or winter squash.
  • A “granola” of crispy nuts and seeds with cinnamon, shredded coconut, sweetener. Pour coconut milk, raw milk or cream over, add a pinch of salt and enjoy.

  1. Yum! Looks great! I too get tired of eggs sometimes (especially in these last few weeks of pregnancy when I KNOW that I should eat them, but don’t really WANT them.) so I’ve really been enjoying this carnival – especially your post as I hope to be going grain free within a few weeks of giving birth!

One other idea I had for you (though it does include sweetener – sugar, honey or maple syrup) is an egg custard. I’ll be sharing a few links to recipes for one tomorrow in my post for Food Renegade Friday, come by to visit!

    Best,
    Sarah

  2. Just found this blog and would love subscribe but I get a big old error message when I try to do so with your “subscribe” button. Also, the “contact” page does not load the actual contact form or info, so I couldn’t let you know that way. Thanks for a great blog, hope it can be fixed so I can receive updates regularly.

  3. I have never been much of an egg eater. As a little kid I wouldn’t eat them at all except maybe, occasionally, well scrambled with lots of cheese. I branched out from there into omlettes and veggie heavy scrambles, and then onto over hard fried eggs. I can now occasionally eat a not-quite-all-the-way-hard fried egg, or a poached egg in soup, but I still have major egg issues. It’s that smell!
I much prefer savory dinner/lunch foods for breakfast. I like baked egg casseroles (mine uses bread but you could tweak it to make it grain free I’m sure) but my all time favorite breakfast is a burrito. Not even a “breakfast” burrito, but taco meat, rice and cheese in a tortilla. I wonder if seasoned taco meat in a lettuce wrap, or something like fajitas with lots of onions and bell peppers would be a doable breakfast for you. Mmm.. burritos.

  4. Love your blog and so glad to find it!

I have been grain-free for close to 10 years and feel great. IMHO, It is the best kept secret for good health.
