Week One of Our CSA

june-3-2009-101

We received our fist CSA share for the year this week and I am like a kid in a candy greens store.

Here is the rundown:

  • 3 heads of lettuce
  • 1 bunch of giant spinach
  • 4-6 bunches of cooking greens (I’ve lost count there are so many)
  • 1 bunch of spring onions
  • 1 bunch of radishes with tops
  • 1 small bunch of thyme
  • 1 pint of strawberries
  • 1 bouquet of flowers, purchased for $1
  • 1 plastic grocery bag full of sorrel, free for the taking

I am definitely going to have to adjust my menu plan to include more salads and cooked greens – like for every meal.

I love everything about CSAs. Getting a box of random things you have never tried before… forcing yourself to eat with the seasons… shaking the hand that grew the food… walking the ground that the food comes from.

I have a respect and appreciation for the food I bring home from the farm, the farmer’s market or my own garden. It is completely lost in a grocery store.

Perhaps that is the key.

And to celebrate we poured fresh, local cream over the strawberries.

  1. A great way to use those greens is to cook them up southern-style and add them to eggs. You could swap out scrambled eggs with greens and onions for your fried egg breakfasts for the next week.

  2. I haven’t even gotten my first CSA share and I’m already struggling to eat the greens my garden is producing. I dread a 3 head of lettuce CSA box!
But those strawberries look fantastic! Check out my blog for a write up on my visit to my CSA farm. Yipee for local, organic food!
