Food Is Not the Only Thing We’re Growing Around Here

I have taken more naps in the last two weeks than I probably have in the past year. I am just coming back to cooking full meals after four weeks of throwing random things together that don’t look totally disgusting. I have been much more absent in this space than I normally would as I try to just get the most basic of daily needs taken care of offline.

While I chalked it up recently to being in flux and soaking up the ordinary, that was only half the story. The other half of the story is that vegetables aren’t the only thing we’re growing around here.

The proverbial bun is in the oven and we hope to meet him or her, Lord willing, early next year.

That also means that not much more than a month after I declared that this would be the first growing season that I wouldn’t be pregnant or caring for a little one, God showed me otherwise. Another reminder that all is in His hands and He is good and gracious to give and take life as He sees fit.

I don’t really know what else to say to that besides He is good and we are so thankful.

And thank you for being patient with me as I begin approving and responding to dozens of pending comments, replying to the many emails that need attention, and catching up on keeping our home and tending to our garden.

Speaking of gardens… I am excited to continue to share with y’all how our little garden grows and the harvests that He has provided.

It is an exciting time around here, friends. How about you and yours?

  2. YAY! Congrats! I’m starting to wonder the same about myself. I have been SO TIRED the past few weeks that I think I’m pregnant or have cancer…. I suppose I should just take a test 😉 Babies are such a blessing enjoy!

  3. Congratulations! Yes, God has a way of surprising us sometimes 😉 I really enjoy reading your posts but don’t worry if “life” slows the blogging down, there are many more important things.

  7. Congratulations – sometimes when we go with the flow, tiny fishes swim with us (giggle)….

I’ve read a book you might love, its one of those odd, little items that one would normally overlook – but one that pulls you in and makes you hesitate to put it down. “The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating” by Elisabeth Tova Bailey. Elisabeth was in Europe and caught a virus. She barely made it home before it became much much worse – she almost died. Her recovery meant she moved into town in a small house where a friend brought her a woodland violet she had dug up and potted – while doing this her friend found a tiny snail that she put in the pot with the plant. This book examines the relationship between the snail and Elisabeth – her delving into the research of these tiny gastropeds – AND its fascinating. Your library should be able to get you a copy – its a small book so can be read in a day or two (or by busy moms, in a week or so)… After the first two chapters I rationed my reading to make it last longer, even reading the notes at the back of the book and the Epilogue..

  8. Yay! Congratulations, Shannon! I love how God keeps his Hand upon us and our plans… 🙂 And how fun for your boys! They’re going to so enjoy a new baby to play with. 😀

  9. I take such pleasure in reading about your life and adventures. And now you are going to be telling us about this new life. Hope you are able to keep right on with your plans regarding the life you and your husband want to live with your children. Wow, when these kids become adults, I hope they really appreciate the work you are going to making sure they grow up the way God intended. God bless you and keep you safe.

  10. How wonderful for you! May Our Lord continue to guide you in this journey.

It is not an easy journey, but with Him everything is possible.

  11. Joyous news. Congradulations and thank you for sharing with us so we can celebrate too! In my last comment I failed to mention the book I was reading and was very moved by. “This Life in Your Hands” by Melissa Coleman. She is the grown daughter of organic guru Eliot Coleman. The book is the story of her growing up with parents who began homesteading. I cried through the last quarter of the book. It is a tragic story yet the author is full of forgiveness and mercy. It’s also a good little recent history of modern day homesteading.
It might interest you as you journey on.

  12. Congratulations! I’m due in December and know all about the taking lots of naps. 🙂

Blessings and may all go well with this new little life!

  13. Congratulations! Hope you feel better and have your energy back soon- I am currently 26 weeks so those not being able or wanting to do much is all too real for me. 🙂

  14. Congratulations! We just found out we’re having another baby too, due in mid-January. I totally know about the naps! 🙂 I do like watching your garden grow and getting new ideas for ours. Ah yes, all that stuff about weeding, mulching and whatnot…so far we’ve managed plant and, water sometimes. Pest control? Sharing some with bugs. Fertilization? (does the compost bin leach nutrients into the ground?) Hmmm… we certainly have areas we need to work on, but it is such fun just planting stuff and seeing what comes up! We have had lots of cucumbers and our one pumpkin plant is producing more pumpkins than we ever imagined–with no effort besides planting the seed! That’s our kind of plant! 🙂

We’re looking forward to reading more in the coming months!

  15. This is quite exciting. my husband and i are actively attempting a lifestyle like this (we can’t have a full blown garden, but we buy all of our food naturally and locally). we actually just found out that we have a litlte one on the way too. i guess God decided to let our honeymoon (as we’ve been married 6 weeks) produce more than just love 😉 this is an incredible and slightly scary time as we face our family and friends with our new news. i couldn’t figure out why all i’ve wanted to do the past week was nap and the slightest thought about certain foods (which i normally enjoy) made me feel sick. i guess we know now! Congratulations to you!

  16. How on earth did I miss this post!???!! Well a hearty congratulations from my growing homestead to yours!!

When I first found out my 1st trimester would be during the busiest season of the year, I was excited thinking I would distract my way right through it. Now that ms hit, I’m not so sure. 🙂 I already feel the hormones taking over my blog (although I hope it doesn’t show!) as I lose my nerve to post about some of the more out there things we do.

Anyway, super happy for your family & I love that the Lord is teaching you though your wee ones. I always find lessons in His sovereignty at times like these too 🙂 Blessings!
