right now
right now, I am…
- so thankful for cool nights and not-too-warm afternoons that allow for more enthusiasm in the kitchen.
- enjoying hot morning tea before the sun comes up and the rest of the house begins to stir.
- thankful for a return of energy and the lessons I learned before its return.
- feeling like I am committing a crime in not having preserved a single food item all summer. Perhaps tomatoes and peaches will be doable?
- eating lots and lots of tomatoes… cherry, heirlooms, slicers. So good.
- accepting the fact that the garden that I started in April, and had to neglect when rest was more important, is mostly a failure… which makes the little harvests that much more precious.
- looking forward to what feels like a new start happening within two months and thankful for the lessons of the in-between.
- cooking more from the pantry with rice, beans, and a plethora of other treasures that are finding their ways into our meals… and enjoying the challenge.
- needing to catch up on every form of correspondence – letters, emails, comments.
- ready to hang laundry, take a walk in the cool breeze with my loves, and tidy up our ever-changing spaces.
What are you up to these August days?
Shannon, I haven’t preserved anything this summer either. No crimes involved, simply the reality of moving and being in-between for the summer. I think I’m going to be in-between for a little while now (my husband’s brewing up more adventures…)
Renee – I hope you tell us about them soon now that my curiosity is piqued!
Shannon — This is an awesome post. Thank you
Shannon- I don’t always get to read your posts but the title caught my eye. I am glad I stopped by. This simple post was just what I needed to read today. Thank you 🙂
Mona – So glad!
Sometimes life work this way. We lost our 4th baby this summer so the garden has turned into chaos, but my body had to rest and my heart to heal.
it is all good. especially the tomatoes.
I’ve made several batches of pasta sauce (thanks to my crock pot and the blessings of tomatoes from the garden) for the freezer.
I have some peaches but I’m not sure how to preserve them. I’ve already made our annual peach pie.
This summer has been very hot. Motivation has been slowed, too. It’s nice to know I’m not the only one just trying to savor these moments.
Joann – I just ordered 30 lb of peaches so maybe you can share what you’re doing with them :).
Lovely post, Shannon. I, too, seem to have let the summer slip by… although partly because I realized that our family does so much better when eating in season, rather than trying to eat summer tomatoes in December. 😉 At least, that’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it. 😀
I’ve been enjoying that early morning cup of tea as well… it’s one really nice thing about hot summers – the weather is so beautiful in the early morning.
Maybe this is a silly question, but how do you get on the Internet for your blog and your email? I hope to be off grid within the next five years, and that part worries me because I’m far from family!
Hi Caroline,
Not silly at all! Because my husband and I both work as freelancers through the internet we have a solar panel and battery set up. The internet comes through via a wireless tower. It’s not our end goal, but it’s helping us build infrastructure until we can get there.
