Unexpected Harvest & A Harvest Dinner

It was a cool evening, welcome after summer seemed to make its last 95 degree cry. We arrived home from a long weekend of visiting loved ones and eating a few more treats than we were used to.

With the cool 60 degree breeze the mosquitoes finally took a break from feasting on us as we headed to the garden. A jungle of tomato plants, every last one of them a volunteer, held red jewels in a sea of green. A garden I had given up on relinquished cherry and roma tomatoes into our bowl and the sweater I cradled them in.

It was an unexpected harvest that produced a much needed home-cooked meal.

While the three boys filled the colander with more cherry tomatoes I brought my green beans and tomatoes inside for a home-cooked meal.

Mushrooms, bell peppers, and a zucchini from the farmer’s market were combined with loads of tomatoes and fresh thyme, basil, and parsley from the garden. Eaten with a dusting of parmesan cheese with a watermelon from one of our farmer friends it was the perfect welcome home dinner.

We ate by candlelight with a fresh bouquet of wildflowers sprucing up our we’re-leaving-soon folding dining table.

It was unexpected, but oh so welcome.

    1. Sarah – Actually I used butter to saute the mushrooms and peppers and then just added everything else + a touch of water.
