We’ll Take Our Fridays Green, Not Black
I grabbed the baby out of her crib, wrapped her in a soft green blanket and headed out into the windy 50 degree day to see what all of the hubbub coming from the kitchen garden was about. Us girls stepped around the corner and found the men of the family participating in a bit of a black Friday revolt.
It all started last week when I stopped at the locally-run hardware store on my way home. I was just stopping in for some potting soil to start some seeds for another planting of the garden. As I approached the check-out line a nice man with a southern accent asked me if "any of y’all are planting cabbage."
I replied that I had planted some from seed weeks ago but was preparing for another planting. He asked if "any of you folks would be interested in some free seedlings" that they were going to have to get rid of anyway.
(This is just one of the many perks of living in a community of people who all live and dress simply and plainly, by the way.)
This was a bit like winning the lottery in our book so I smiled and said "Yes sir, that is very generous. I will see how much room I have in the back."
So I take partial responsibility for this radical protest, and I’m sorry to have to implicate that nice man who ran the hardware store. But chief among those responsible would have to be these men.
They ate eggs, fruit, and raw goat milk for breakfast which, in hindsight, may have gotten the ball rolling on the day’s events. But this Papa who gathered up his little army of protesters, handed them their trowel weapons, and let them root up these plants and place them in fresh soil… well I’m pretty sure he’s a traitor to the consumerist culture we live in.
And I’m guessing he’s okay with that. Because about the only things this man hates more than margarine and crisco are shopping and black Friday.
And those cabbage plants… well, they’re actually kale. But that doesn’t pardon that nice man from the hardware store from his part in the events of The Green Friday of 2012.
What a prize. :] Viva la Revolucion!
LOVE this! We don’t have Black Friday in Canada but our retailers really rolled out the sales this year in an attempt to keep people from crossing the border to shop. The whole thing makes my stomach turn. No…I’d much rather be home basking in the warm glow of the love from my family. I hate shopping too. It is so tedious and in many cases unnecessary. Thanks for this lovely story. It has brightened my day. xo
Hehe! What a revolt you all had…The events of The Green Friday of 2012 will be remembered for years to come I’m sure 😉
That was so nice of the gentleman at the hardware store to give you those kale plants! I do have a weakness for the green stuff and I’m not talking bout money ^.^
When they get nice and big you should definitely try making some kale chips if you haven’t tried that already!
What a lovely way to spend any day, let alone the day that stands as one of the worst jokes on humanity. 😉
Your boys are getting so big, Shannon… I am so proud of your family! What a glorious education they’re receiving. Many prayers & blessings to you.
Where are you located, that you have such beautiful weather this weekend? We had snow in Michigan, definitely not 50-degrees!
