Bringing Kune Kune Pigs to the Homestead
We have long wanted to add pigs to our homestead and pork to our meat supply. We’ve done a couple of turns at keeping some local wild hogs given to us but it was all spur of the moment and done in a more confined space than we were hoping our long-term solution would be.
For years we have looked into various breeds and settled on two possibilities: the American Guinea Hog and Kune Kunes. Both are pretty docile breeds and kune kunes have the added bonus of not being as heavy of rooters as most pig breeds are. Kune kunes also graze grass and weeds more so than other breeds.
At least those were some of our selling points. So when an unregistered breeding pair came up on Craigslist a couple of months ago, we kept an eye on it. About a week-and-a-half ago I asked Stewart if he was still considering going to pick those pigs up. He wasn’t sure with many of the other things going on, he said, so I figured we were on hold.
Well, the next thing I knew the price had dropped enough to make it worth the drive so we got right to work last Wednesday on securing their fencing and shelter. By Saturday things were set and Stewart and the boys spent Monday picking up our newest addition to the homestead.
I’ll probably try to share more on this particular breed, how we are fencing and feeding them, and more. But for now, we welcome George and Rita.
